High Schoolers Dominate 2001 Winter Wimp Foot Race Tres Nolett, 21, of Gloversville, took second in the race with a time of 24:57, and third place went to last year's Winter Wimp winner John Hoffman, Jr., 16, of Fort Plain, whose time was 25:30. Tres was a standout runner at Broadalbin-Perth High and now runs at Lebanon Valley College, where he's a junior. John is a junior at Fort Plain High, where he's the school's top runner. In a close finish, the women's division race was won by Kim Davey, 18, of Amsterdam, another Amsterdam High School running standout. Kim, a senior, finished the race in 31:56, edging Mayfield High Schooli's top runner Amber Shibley, 16, who was six seconds back. Martha DeGrazia, 49, of Slingerlands, rounded out the top three, crossing the line just eight seconds off the winning pace. In the companion 2.2-mile race, Charles Smullen, 40, of Amsterdam was the men's division winner with a time of 12:50. Bryan Butler, 32, of Troy and Terry Failing, 54, of Clifton Park were second and third with times of 15:41 and 15:59. For the women, Jo-Ann Spinelli, 41, of Latham had the winning time of 15:56, with Sue Paciolla, 45, of Broadalbin and Patricia Valiante, 45, of Amsterdam finishing second and third in 19:48 and 22:34, respectively. A total of 97 men and women competed in this year's 17th running of the Winter Wimp, contested under clear skies, with calm winds and temperatures in the thirties that made conditions ideal for running. The race series is sponsored by the Fulmont Roadrunners Club. A highlight of the post-race festivities was awarding of the Fulmont Roadrunners' runner of the year honors for the top male and female cross country runners in Fulton and Montgomery County high schools. These awards went to race winner Jaime Julia of Amsterdam High and to Megan Olds of Gloversville High. Megan was participating in an indoor track meet and was unable to attend the race to receive her award. |
