2003 Cross Country Award Winners Named

Stephen Lyons of Broadalbin-Perth High School and Krissy Welch of Amsterdam High School have been selected as winners of the Fulmont Roadrunners Club’s 2003 Cross-Country Runner of the Year Awards honoring the top male and female cross-country runners in Fulton and Montgomery County high schools.

For their achievements, Lyons and Welch received award certificates and specially engraved walnut plaques during ceremonies following the Winter Wimp in January.

Lyons, a B-P senior, competes in the Foothills Council and was first in all of the Foothills Council dual meets during the year. He also finished first in the 2003 Foothills Council Invitational, first in the Section II Class C Championship, and first at the Galway Invitational.

Welch is a freshman at Amsterdam, where she competes in the Big 10 Conference. Highlights of her running year included first-place finishes at the Cobleskill Invitational and Grout Run freshman race, and a third at the Big 10 Invitational. During the year, she set a new record of 18:38 at the 2.97-mile Amsterdam High home course.

Outstanding XC Runner Awards

In addition to the overall winners, the Fulmont Roadrunners select the top male and female cross-country runners in each of the Fulton and Montgomery County high schools that field cross-country teams.

Winners of these Outstanding Cross-Country Runner Awards for 2003 were Alex Brooks and Kim Negrich of Mayfield High School, John Kenworthy and Caitlyn Phillips of Gloversville High School, Brendan Petty and Katie Nellis of Fort Plain High School, Chuck Florence and Vanessa Henry of Fonda-Fultonville High School, Patrick Ferrara and Emily Smith of Canajoharie High School, Russ Shoop and Lindsay Rappleyea of Broadalbin-Perth High School, and Jeff Palmerino and Jenna Krong of Amsterdam High School.
