2007 High School Cross-Country Award Winners Named

Gina Cristaldi and Andrew Goodspeed, both from Broadalbin-Perth High School, have been selected as winners of the Fulmont Roadrunners Club’s annual Cross-Country Runner of the Year Awards, according to an announcement by Fulmont Roadrunners president Joyce Poulin.  The awards honor 2007’s top male and female cross-country runners in Fulton and Montgomery County high schools.

For their achievements, the athletes received specially engraved walnut plaques at the club’s annual Winter Wimp foot race held earlier this month in Hagaman.

Gina, a junior, was number one runner on Broadalbin-Perth High’s Section II, Class B championship team.  She finished fifth overall in the Class B sectional championship race and was 24th in the New York State Class B Championship that followed.  During the year, she also took firsts in the Guilderland and Cobleskill Invitationals and was fifth in the Foothills Council and Cobleskill Invitationals. Gina’s 5K (3.1-mile) personal best time is 18:44, recorded in October at the Burnt Hills Invitational.

Boys Runner of the Year award winner Andrew Goodspeed also is a junior at Broadalbin-Perth High.  Highlights of his cross-country year included a third-place finish in the Section II, Class B Championship race, where he recorded his 5K personal best time of 16:23.  That race qualified him for the Class B State Championship event, where he was 60th. Andrew also distinguished himself during the year with a third place finish in the Queensbury
Invitational and sixth in the Foot Hills Council Invitational.

Outstanding XC Runner Awards

In addition to the overall winners, the Fulmont Roadrunners select the top male and female cross-country runners in each of the Fulton and Montgomery County high schools that field cross-country teams. They too were honored at the Winter Wimp.

Winners of these Outstanding Cross-Country Runner Awards for 2007 were Sierra Derby and Josh Norman of Mayfield High School, Samantha Bielli and Austin Hunold of Gloversville High School, Cecilia Hill and Dylan Antalek of Canajoharie-Fort Plain High Schools, Anastasia Kolbe and Cody Stoliker of Fonda-Fultonville High School, Elizabeth Ferlazzo and Justin Ferguson of Broadalbin-Perth High School, and Evelyn Marerro and Rob Morey of Amsterdam High School.

The Fulmont Roadrunners Club initiated the high school cross-country awards program several years ago as part of its efforts to encourage and reward young runners in Fulton and Montgomery Counties. It also awards scholarships annually to outstanding high school seniors in the area who compete in varsity running programs and are going on to college.
