Winter Wimp
2010
This year's Winter Wimp, started semi
promptly, at 1:04 p.m., after we received the final okay from the leader of the
13 member Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department. Brendan Devine, Elmira,
crossed the finish line in first place in the 4.4 mile "main
event" 23 minutes and 31 seconds latter. For the
second year in a row, Shuan Evans, Middle Grove, finished second
(both times behind Brendan) in 23:56 and John McDonald, Clifton
Park, finished third in 24:10. Kellie Lawton, Gloversville, was the first
overall female finisher, in the same event, in 30:39. Meghan Davey,
Amsterdam, was second in 30:52 and Chelsea Desalvatore, Clifton
Park, finished third in 31:33. It was 19 year old, Brendan's 4th
overall win, which broke the tie with Sandra Phibbs, as the only 3
time winner of the 24 year event and at 15 years old Kellie became (to
the best of my knowledge) the youngest overall female winner. A few of
the more notable performances were turned in by: William Venner,
Granville, in 26:00, 8th place overall, at 50 years old and
Martha Degrazia, Slingerlands, in 35:53, 58th overall, at 58 years
old. Joe Kelly, Menands, the oldest competitor, at 76,
finished in 45:30, good for 124th overall, 1 minute and 3 seconds ahead of
the races youngest competitor 7 year old Jennifer Roma, East
Greenbush.
In the 2.2 mile event Ian Thane,
Amsterdam finished first overall in 12:52 and Kimberly Geniti was the first overall female finisher in
15:29.
Every bit as impressive as the 142
finishers in the 4.4 miler and the 67 finishers in the 2.2 miler was the
tremendous efforts of the many volunteers, several of which had to deal with the
14 degree temperature and sub zero wind chill for several minutes before the
race started and several minutes after the races last finisher crossed the
finish line in just over one hour and five minutes they included: Diane
Hanson, Bill Platt, Ed Poulin, Joyce Poulin, Joe Rzezniak, Jake Smith, Brian
Teague and the aforementioned members of the Hagaman Volunteer Fire
Department. Jim Moore and Debbie Beach
compiled the race results, with their usual expertise. Besides race
course activities,volunteers also completed the
following (and other) tasks: delivery of the chairs and tables from the
Hagaman Civic Center to the YMCA the night before the race (and then back to the
Civic Center after the race), putting the bags together with their inserts,
laying down the canvas protection on the Gym floor, obtaining the food and
drinks (includes pizza from 5 different area establishments and 3 kinds of soup)
food preparation pre-race and race day registration, sale of of club
clothing, laying down and taking up of the carpet protection in the hallways,
and even mopping up the floor The volunteers included: Marcia and
Tom Adams, Bill Austin, Joe and Dollie Bieniek, Ed Bown, Jane and Tom
Constantine, Brian Dillenbeck, Jean Karutis, Becky Kercardo, Ray Lee, Bill
and Laura Milak, Lowell and Joan Montgomery, Gerri Moore, Ginny Mosher, Stu
Palczak, Billie Platt, Lorrie Sargalis and Rick Vertucci.
