Husband-Wife Team Wins 19th Annual Mule Haul

The husband and wife team of Derek and Theresa Stern of Ann Arbor, Mich., were overall winners of the Fulmont Roadrunners Club’s 19th annual Mule Haul 8-kilometer (4.96-mile) foot race, held Sunday (June 16) in Fort Hunter, N.Y. Their winning times were 26:46 (5:24 minute/mile pace) and 30:55 (6:14 pace), respectively.

For Theresa, 32, the former Theresa Papa of Fonda, it was her fifth Mule Haul women’s division victory. Her first win, as a 19-year-old in 1989, set a record that still stands for what was then a five-mile course.

Theresa is a 1987 graduate of Fonda-Fultonville High School, where she excelled in cross country and track (distance events). She went on to run cross country at West Virginia University.

A total of 140 runners—91 men and 49 women—took part in Sunday’s race. Other top five finishers included Chris Camp, 19, of Ballston Lake, who was second in 27:28; John Hoffman, Jr., 17, of Fort Plain, third in 28:46; Stu Palczak, 37, of Amsterdam, fourth in 28:55; and Mark McKenzie, 39, of Ballston Spa, who was fifth in 29:03. Behind Stern in the women’s division were Martha DeGrazia, 51, of Slingerlands, whose time was 35:06; Annette Fry, 45, of Northville, 35:29; Janette Krong, 39, of Amsterdam, who finished in 36:15; and Jane Burroughs, 13, of Amsterdam, who clocked a 39:45 finish.

A highlight of race day was the awarding of the Fulmont Roadrunners’ annual James R. Dern Memorial Scholarships. The $500 awards went to Jacob Krong of Amsterdam High School and Noelle Eberts of Gloversville High School.

Dern Scholarships go to outstanding high school seniors who participated in cross country and/or track during their high school years and are going on to college. Jake will be attending Colgate University and Noelle will be going to New York University.
