Dern Scholarship Winners Named
Winners of the Fulmont Roadrunners Club's 2002 James R. Dern Memorial Scholarships are Noelle Eberts of Gloversville and Jacob Krong of Amsterdam. The scholar-athletes received their $500 awards as part of the post-race festivities at the Mule Haul, the FMRRC's annual Father's Day 8K road race in Fort Hunter on June 16.
Noelle, the daughter of Jeanelle and Kevin Eberts, was a member of Gloversville High School's class of 2002. She was captain of both her indoor and outdoor track teams, as well as captain and M.V.P. of her soccer team. A well-rounded athlete, Noelle won numerous awards in a variety of events including the 300 meters, 400 meters, triple jump, long jump, pentathlon, and several relays. Her peers considered her both a leader and role model as they elected her class president four times and selected her as the school ambassador to the prestigious Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Conference. She also was involved in many community-oriented activities including Red Cross blood drives, Special Olympics, and Teens Against Tobacco Use, all while holding a part-time job. She will be attending New York University this fall and intends to study political science, economics, and sociology. Jake Krong, son of Janette and Joseph Krong, was ranked third in Amsterdam High School's class of 2002. He was a distance running specialist in high school and won numerous competitions and awards as the captain of Amsterdam's Big Ten League championship cross country and track teams. He holds school records in the 1600 meters (4:17.5), 10,000 meters (33:59), and 3200 meters (9:16.95), a time that ranks him 11th on the Section II all-time list. In addition, he was the 2001 Empire State Games gold medallist in the 10,000 meters and just recently won 3rd place in 1600 meters and 4th place in the 3200 meters at the New York State Track Championships. He's a member of the National Honor Society, the "running specialist" at a local sporting goods store, and designed and maintained the A.H.S. running team's web site. Jake will attend Colgate University this fall to study computer science and information technology. He will compete in both cross country and track for the Colgate Red Raiders. Noelle and Jake are the 15th and 16th recipients of the scholarship that bears the name of Jim Dern, a Canajoharie resident, Beechnut executive, and longtime running enthusiast and FMRRC member. With this year's awards, more than $7000 in Dern scholarships have been granted to young men and women from eight area high schools. The awards program was begun in 1995. posted 8/10/2002 |
